Chairman’s Note

After a five year stint, John O Sullivan Managing Director Tourism Australia has decided to move on. He will be leaving the organisation in June to take up a new role as CEO and Executive Director of the ASX-listed company, Experience Co. Under his leadership, international arrivals from all target markets including India increased substantially. He traveled to India few times to understand the dynamics of the market, meet local stakeholders and to set strategies to position India as one of the top tourism-source markets for Australia in the near future. I personally wish John all the best for his future endeavors.

The recent India Tourism Roadshow in Sydney and Melbourne was a success. However, the industry, particularly the larger India focused outbound tour operators, are looking for newer avenues on how to inspire the Aussies to make India a preferred destination. Maybe newer products are required with a focus on wildlife tourism and river cruising, both of which are rapidly becoming popular draw cards for India. In order to develop some way forward strategies, within AITTC we are planning a round table with some key tour operators to know their thoughts and suggestions which ultimately becomes an input for India Tourism.

Sydney will be soon glittering with Vivid lights. Last year I noticed many Indians beating the winter chill and wandering from site to site for an enjoyable engagement with the illuminated version of the city. I am sure many of them in the crowd were visitors from India as the word of Vivid magic has well spread in India as a draw card for visiting Australia. Hope this year we will see more visitors from India. Thanks to Destination NSW for their great marketing effort in India.

Its federal election time in both countries. I am keen to see the results, hoping whoever wins and forms government keeps the bilateral tourism momentum unchanged and going.

Finally, I take this opportunity to welcome Mr Manish Gupta, new Indian Consul General in Sydney. He arrived from New Delhi on 14 May. In our next issue, we hope to include his profile for information of our readers
